Video Recital Learning and Success
Before the great snow-apocalypse last week, we put on our second video recital, this one with a Valentine’s Day theme. There were still a few hiccups. I had to remember that “private” is different than “unlisted.” The link Youtube provides me ahead of time doesn’t seem to work the day of to bring families to our livestream. In good news, the livestream software worked like a charm this time! And while it was a small program, I’m so happy we’re providing some sort of performance opportunity for students even while the world is shut down.
It’s easy to get down on myself when things go wrong in a new medium. My videos aren’t as cool as they could be yet! The link didn’t work! Everyone will think I’m a big dummy! But, I’ve been through these pains before. I held little recitals with very young students when I built a music program at an area preschool. I started to learn what does and doesn’t work. The first recital for Jenna-G Music independently included a misunderstanding about building access and frantically calling members of a church to see who could come unlock it for us. One venue included a podium, with which I learned not to stand in front of families trying to talk between every student performance, because we luckily had too many students to get through! I learned from experience about the limits of attention for young students, but especially younger siblings coming to see a performance. I learned how to more clearly express my expectations and needs to teachers and parents helping out, and to always expect my newest teacher to be late or forget a recital if they don’t have a student performing.
New endeavors will always come with some growing pains, and probably a bit of looking silly. But, I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to work with students and lessons long enough to be able to expand into new territory, learning right along with everyone else.
And, without further adieu!!!! Love! A Video Recital by Jenna-G Music, LLC
